WTF is Anti-Design?

This was my inner question before entering my last semester of design school after having first-hand experience with Spotify’s 2021 Wrapped. My answer: it’s a criticism of consumer culture. The continuous drive for novelty. An embracement the bizarre. Essentially, it’s deeply ordered chaos.

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop

Initial Rendering

This initial rendering of my exhibit was my first attempt at the anti-design aesthetic for my final visual communication piece. It turned from a poster series to an exhibition wall after multiple critiques and discussions with my peers.

Initial Exhibition

This was the first aesthetic I went with for my final exhibition wall. I wanted it to still be in an anti-design aesthetic, but take up an entire wall space to be experienced by a viewer. However, during critique, it was expressed that stripping down the exhibition to a more palatable design might make it more viewer friendly.

Personas + Moodboard

This viewer is a new age designer. They stay up on trends and love trying their hand at today’s edition of Bauhaus. This designer went to the Cooper Hewitt for inspiration and boy did they find it. They live for deconstructing the normal and pushing design to the new frontier.

The New Designer on the Block

This viewer isn’t so sure about trying their hand at cutting edge design theory, but is cautiously open to exploring what the younger generation is pushing. While they may have some push back, they know their design ancestry and know that design is always changing wiht new schools of thought.
